Chhatti Puja also known as Shashthi Puja, is enacted on the 6th day of the baby’s birth. The puja is performed in the evening after sunsets.
In Chhathi puja, the baby is given a bath and Najarie are tied in the baby’s hands and feet to keep it safe from the negative powers. After that, Chaunki poorna is performed on the door entrance using Puja Chaunki.
Then over a Khoomchi, red clothes and some jewellery is placed for the baby boy. If the baby is a girl, Soparo is used and is covered with bangles for her good luck.
Which foods are important to cook in Chhatti Puja?
On this day the family cook all types of pakwaan like sweet, sour, spicy, bitter and most importantly Kadi chawal, Udat Daal Dahi Bade, Puri, Roti, Rice Kheer and more. The Chhatti puja food is created differently in each culture. Two thalis are prepared in which one is prepared for Chhatti Maiya and the second for the baby’s mother.
The food is first offered to Chhatti Maiya before anyone eats it. Then, it is experienced that Goddess Chhatti comes into the baby’s dream and protects it for 6 months.
